MegaFon Tajikistan Switches to New Battery Types

The first operator of new digital capabilities has started a large-scale replacement of storage batteries (SB) used for the autonomous power supply of mobile communication base stations. Instead of old lead-acid batteries, more reliable lithium-ion batteries will be used. This will allow base stations to operate longer in case of external power network outages.

One of the advantages of lithium-ion batteries is their relatively long service life and smaller size. More batteries can be installed in the area of one base station, which increases the battery life of communication equipment. Additionally, ( SB )new have a wider operating temperature range, meaning they are less likely to fail during the significant seasonal changes typical of Tajikistan’s climate.

“This year we plan to replace batteries at more than 170 base stations in different parts of the country. We expect that the new ( SB) will significantly improve network reliability, allowing customers to stay connected even during prolonged power outages,” says Rafil Aglyamov, Technical Director of MegaFon Tajikistan.

The ( SB )are primarily replaced in areas with high network load. In 2024, the majority of lithium-ion batteries will be installed in Dushanbe – almost 230 BACs in more than 110 base station (BPS) areas. In SAC, 30 SB have updated autonomous power supply systems, and about 30 more base stations in Sughd – Khatlon will have a new type of battery. In the future, all operator power supply units will be switched to more reliable and temperature-resistant LHCs.
